뽕뽕브릿지에서 두 달간 머물면서 창작활동
새해 봄 야심찬 비디오 작품 선보일 예정

저는 영국 출신 예술가 가브리엘 핏쳐(Gabriel Pitcher)입니다. 지난 수년간 아시아에서 활동해오고 있는데, 대체로 말레이시아 페낭에서 작업을 진행해오고 있습니다. 현재 진행중인 작업은 주로 비디오와 설치미술 작품입니다. 이런 점에서 한국은 매우 적합한 장소인 것 같습니다. 내가 지난 1월 처음 한국에 왔을 때 광주와 서울에서 미디어아트를 접하고 매우 놀라웠습니다. 특히 말레이시아와 비교해서 볼 때 그것은 아주 놀라웠습니다.

나는 힌 버스 데폿(Hin Bus Depot) 예술센터 출신 작가로서는 처음으로 광주를 방문해 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하고 있습니다. 나는 2014년 페낭에서 뽕뽕브릿지 소속 작가인 박세희씨를 만났는데, 올해초 두 갤러리간 교환프로그램으로 인해 이곳에 오게되었습니다.

우리는 힌 버스 데폿에서 ‘프롤로그’라는 전시회를 가졌는데, 광주출신 작가 5명과 페낭지역 작가 6명이 참여했습니다. 그것은 조지타운 페스티벌 16의 두 번째 전시회 직후였습니다.

나는 뽕뽕브릿지(B-Cones) 전시회를 보기 위해 올해초 처음 발산마을을 방문했습니다. 나는 갤러리와 이곳에서 만난 사람들을 좋아합니다. 그래서 뽕뽕브릿지 레시던시 프로그램에 참여한 것을 행복하게 생각합니다. 나는 발산마을의 낡은 집들과 독특한 분위기를 좋아합니다. 이곳은 페낭의 갤러리와 매우 흡사한 분위기를 갖고 있습니다.

이곳은 내가 전혀 경험하지 못한 풍경과 문화를 접 할 수 있어 지속적으로 영감을 불러 일으킵니다. 그래서 이제는 평범한 것에는 호기심이나 흥미가 발동하지 않습니다. 이것들은 순식간에 영감을 떠올리게 합니다. 나의 새로운 작품에 대해 나는 여기서 만난 몇몇의 한국 작가들과 새로운 비디오작품을 만들고 있습니다.

나는 방금 원고를 완성하고 문유미 작가와 조만간 작품제작을 시작할 예정입니다. 문 유미작가는 뽕뽕브릿지에서 전시회를 가졌습니다. 나는 이곳에 머물면서 만난 권승찬 작가의 전시공간에서 촬영을 시작할 예정입니다. 나는 그의 전시작품과 공간이 흥미롭고 역동적이라고 생각합니다. 다른 형식으로 만들어진 다른 작품과 함께 나는 2017년 봄에 여기서 전시를 개최할 계획이며, 새로운 작품 제작에 열중하고 있습니다.
  

나는 여기서 어떤 불편함도 느끼지 않고 있으며 마을주민들이 매우 친절하고 비록 내가 한국어를 못하지만 환영해주고 있습니다. 마을 어르신들이 나에게 계속 말을 걸어오고 있지만 나는 그 의미를 알아차리는 못해서 그저 정중하게 머리를 끄덕일 뿐입니다.

여기서 머무른 2달 동안 나는 편안함을 느꼈습니다. 발산마을은 아마도 젊은이들을 그리워 하고 거리가 번잡하는 것을 그리워하지만 나는 머지 않아 한 두개의 카페가 문을 열고 그러한 그리움이 해소될 것이라고 생각합니다.

 

My name is Gabriel Pitcher, Im a British born artist and I’ve been based in Asia for the last few years, predominantly Penang, Malaysia. Currently my practice focuses more on video and installation work, so Korea seems to be a great place to be. When I first visited in January earlier this year, I was impressed with the scope of media art being shown here in Gwangju and in Seoul. Especially in comparison to Malaysia, I found it to be more progressive and daring.

I am the first artist associated with the Hin Bus Depot Art Centre to visit Gwangju and participate in an artist in residency program. I met Sehee Sarah Bark, who was associated with PongPong in 2014 in Penang, after keeping in touch we initiated an exchange program between the two galleries earlier this year. We had our first group show called ‘Prologue' at Hin Bus Depot which included 5 Gwangju based artists and 6 based in Penang. It was immediately followed with a second exhibition which was associated with Georgetown Festival 16’.

I first visited this space at the beginning of the year, when I saw B-Cones exhibition. I liked the gallery and the group of people I met here so was happy engage with PpongPpong for a residency program. I liked the rawness of the space and its character, I actually found it quite reminiscent of the gallery in Penang.

 

There is constant inspiration around me, visually & culturally it is very different to my background, so its not hard to be curious/intrigued by something on a regular basis. This can quickly turns into inspiration. For my new work, Im actually collaborating with a couple of local artists which I met here and creating a new video piece. I just completed writing the script and I plan to work with Yumi Moon, who will be performing in the piece (she just had a show in PongPong where we me)t. I plan to shoot in 권승찬 exhibition space who is another local artist I met whilst being here. I found his exhibition and its space to be intriguing and dynamic. Along with some other work in different formats, I plan to exhibit here in Spring time of 2017’ so I’m very excited to create some new pieces.

I haven’t had any difficulties whilst being here, on the whole Ive found the locals to be very kind and welcoming, although I don’t speak the language (this is the largest barrier) it doesn’t stop some old ladies talking to me, I just nod my head politely as I have no idea what they are talking about.

After being here for 2 months, I feel comfortable. Balsan Village is perhaps missing some young people and some hustle and bustle in the streets, but Im sure in the near future with an opening of a cafe or two, that will be remedied.
